Set up Lounjy for your parents or family

Helping your parents or your gran with their TV? Here is how to set Lounjy up properly once, so all they have to do afterwards is watch.

Lounjy provides no content

Lounjy does not provide any channels, films, series or playlists. You use your parents' own IPTV subscription, and that service must hold the rights to what it streams. Only use a service that has permission from the rights holders. See also Rights holders.

Get ready

Have these things to hand and you'll be done in about fifteen minutes.

  • The service's login details. With Xtream Codes, that's a server address, a username and a password. With M3U, it's a link. If that playlist includes a TV guide, Lounjy fetches it automatically. They are in the message your parents got from their service. A server address looks something like http://service.example:8080.
  • The device. Lounjy runs on Android TV, on an Android phone or tablet, and on a Windows PC. See Lounjy on your device for how to install it.
  • The network. Your phone needs to be on the same Wi-Fi network as the TV. A network cable to the TV gives the steadiest picture.
  • The number of connections. Many services only allow one or two connections at a time. If more devices watch at once, the picture may stop.

Install and add the playlist with your phone

Typing long addresses with a remote is a pain. So you enter the details on your own phone instead.

  1. Install Lounjy on your parents' TV or PC. See Android TV or Windows.
  2. Open Lounjy, choose Add playlist and then With your phone. A QR code appears with a six-digit pairing code.
  3. Scan the QR code with your phone's camera. The pairing code is filled in for you.
  4. Enter the Xtream Codes details or the M3U link and choose Send.
  5. Lounjy on the TV picks up the details and shows how far loading has got. With a large list, the first time takes a while.

The details go straight from your phone to the TV over the home network, not through us. The pairing code works once and expires after ten minutes. After that, the password is stored encrypted on the device.

Do your parents use a phone themselves? Then just enter the details in the app directly. On a tablet you can also use With your phone.

Finally, open Settings → Status and diagnostics to check everything. It shows whether the service can be reached. If the service provides it, you also see when the subscription runs out.

Prepare favourites and a custom layout

A custom layout is part of Plus, which is coming soon. See the FAQ. Favourites are always available.

A service can have a lot of channels with names full of codes, while your parents usually watch only a handful. Put those first.

  • Favourites: pick a channel in Live TV and choose Favourite, or press the red button. The channel then shows up under Favourites in Live TV and in the Favourite channels row on Home.
  • Channel menu: choose Edit, press the yellow button, long-press OK or right-click. That's where you find the options below.
  • Rename: turn a long name full of codes into one your parents recognise.
  • Number: give channels the numbers they're used to. While watching, they just type the number with the digit keys.
  • Move up and Move down: put the channels in a fixed order.
  • Favourite group: the groups your parents open often then appear at the top under Favourite groups.
  • Hide: remove channels they never watch. You can bring them back in Settings → Channels → Hidden channels.

Does the same channel appear more than once, for example in HD and 4K? Lounjy merges them by default (Settings → Channels → Merge duplicate channels is on). If one version stutters, Lounjy switches to another by itself. Your layout stays in place when Lounjy updates the channels later.

Keep it simple

The default settings usually work best. A few changes in Settings do make life easier for your parents.

  • Display → Day or night: choose Automatic, Day or Night. Under Language you choose the language of the menus.
  • Playback → Audio language and Subtitles: Lounjy then picks that language automatically, if the channel or film has it.
  • Playback → Subtitle size: choose Large or Extra large.
  • Playback → Subtitle style: Easy to read puts white text on a dark box. High contrast is bold and bigger.
  • On startup: set Advanced settings to Show and choose Last channel under On startup. Lounjy then opens straight on last night's channel.
  • Automatic updates: leave this on. Lounjy then updates channels and the TV guide by itself, and never while someone is watching.

Make a backup

Backups are part of Plus, which is coming soon.

If the TV breaks or gets reset, you don't want to start from scratch. So make a backup once everything is ready.

  1. In Settings → Backup, choose Export to file. On a TV, Lounjy usually puts the file in the Download folder and shows you where it is. Then copy the file to a USB stick or another device. If it only lives on the TV, it's lost when the TV breaks.
  2. To restore it later, choose Import from file. You re-enter the password for each playlist. For Xtream Codes, you can do that with your phone again on a TV.

The backup holds the playlists, settings, favourites, recent channels and TV guide links. Passwords are not included. Custom names, custom numbers and hidden channels are not included either. So keep the service's login details somewhere safe yourself.

Explain it in five minutes

Only explain what they do every day. These buttons are enough to get by.

  • If they end up on Home by accident and press Back, Lounjy doesn't close straight away. First they see Press Back again to close Lounjy.
  • In Live TV and in the player controls, the bottom of the screen shows what the coloured buttons do.
  • Write the five buttons on a note next to the TV.
  • If something doesn't work, ask them what's on screen. Lounjy explains problems in plain language. You can then check Status and diagnostics.
